The global data center market is experiencing strong growth, with 871 new colocation, hyperscale, and enterprise data center facilities developed in 2024 alone. From 2025 to 2030, cumulative investments in the sector are projected to reach approximately $1,022.44 billion. This surge is fueled by increasing adoption of AI and machine learning, rising rack power densities, and sustainability initiatives such as transitioning from diesel to HVO fuel and implementing liquid cooling systems. AI-ready data centers, which require specialized hardware like GPUs and TPUs and robust power and cooling infrastructure, are attracting substantial investment. Additionally, higher rack power densities are helping reduce capital expenditures by minimizing the need for additional equipment, while also driving the need for advanced cooling solutions.
Data Center Market Trends
Data centers currently consume approximately 3% of the world’s electricity and contribute around 2% of global carbon emissions. This figure is expected to rise to about 10% within the next decade. To address their environmental impact, expanding data centers are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources.
Rising investments in the sector have also led to significant innovations in data center construction and operations. Examples include the adoption of green building materials such as green concrete, the implementation of liquid cooling systems to support higher rack densities, the use of small nuclear reactors, the replacement of diesel generators with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) alternatives, and the development of high-density power and cooling infrastructure.
With growing global demand for data storage and hosting services, the data center market is seeing the entry of new players. Notable new entrants include EDGNEX Data Centres by DAMAC and Form8tion Data Centers.
5G Expansion Drives Surge in Edge Data Center Deployments Worldwide
The rapid adoption of 5G services is accelerating the deployment of edge data centers globally, creating a decentralized data infrastructure model. Edge data centers, which connect to centralized hyperscale facilities, are essential for enabling real-time processing, low latency, and supporting emerging technologies like IoT and AI.
Major 5G advancements took place in late 2024 across several countries. Ericsson announced a $440.9 million investment in Canada to support 5G, 6G, AI, and Cloud RAN technologies. In Saudi Arabia, Zain KSA launched 5G-Advanced using new 600 MHz spectrum, while Free became the first telco in France to offer 5G 3.5GHz SA nationwide. In Africa, Safaricom expanded its 5G network to over 1,000 sites in Kenya, and Nigeria signed an MoU with Ericsson to boost 5G development. India saw significant investment, with Airtel and Jio committing $2 billion toward 5G expansion.
Other notable developments include Nokia’s 5G deployments in Brazil and Colombia, and Huawei’s partnership with du to launch the Middle East’s first indoor 5G advanced network. China also launched its 5G Advanced services and outlined plans for national 6G rollout by 2030.
These advancements have spurred the growth of edge data centers. New players like Latos entered the UK market with plans to build regional edge facilities, while nLighten rolled out data centers across cities such as London, Leeds, and Birmingham. In Southern Europe, Quetta Data Centers—a platform by Azora and Core Capital—announced a $538.5 million investment to build six edge facilities in Spain and Portugal.
Together, these developments underscore the critical role of 5G in fueling digital transformation and driving demand for edge computing infrastructure globally.
Global Trade War Intensifies as US Imposes Sweeping Tariffs; China and Others Retaliate
The world is witnessing a sharp escalation in trade tensions as the United States, under President Donald Trump, imposes sweeping tariffs on imports from approximately 90 countries. Dubbed “Liberation Day,” the April 2, 2025 announcement introduced reciprocal tariffs aimed at addressing the U.S. trade deficit. A baseline 10% tariff on all imports was implemented on April 5, with some countries facing much higher rates—China’s import tariffs surged to 245%, prompting a retaliatory 125% tariff on U.S. goods.
While the general tariff rollout was paused for 90 days on April 9, the steep tariffs on Chinese goods remain in effect. President Trump also announced exemptions on April 11 for most computer-related imports, including smartphones and laptops, valued at $174 billion last year.
Retaliation from trade partners is mounting. Alongside China, countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan have imposed significant tariffs on U.S. imports. Economists warn that prolonged trade barriers could result in severe recessions and mark a dangerous shift toward global protectionism.
Western Europe Data Center Market Sees Strong Growth Led by the Netherlands, Ireland, and Italy
The data center market in Western Europe is expanding rapidly, with the Netherlands, Ireland, and Italy emerging as key hubs. The Netherlands is experiencing strong growth due to factors like affordable land and access to natural free cooling. It is projected to attract cumulative investments of approximately USD 7.77 billion from 2025 to 2030. The country currently hosts around 125 operational data centers and is set to add 11 new facilities in 2024, with major operators like Equinix, Iron Mountain, Digital Realty, and Vantage Data Centers leading the market.
Ireland is among the fastest-growing data center markets in the region, securing around USD 470 million in investments in 2024. Its growth is driven by high connectivity, robust fiber infrastructure, and increasing AI adoption across enterprises. Hyperscale developments are rising, with major cloud providers such as Microsoft, IBM, AWS, Oracle, and Tencent active in the country.
Italy is also becoming a significant player, benefiting from strong connectivity via 33 operational submarine cable systems. Driven by rapid digital transformation and rising demand for cloud services, the Italian government plans to invest USD 950 million in a national cloud infrastructure by the end of 2025 to support sensitive data migration and fuel the digital economy.
