Akshay Kumar Calls for a More Purpose-Driven Approach to Volunteerism
Business Development Director and philanthropist Akshay Kumar of Houston, Texas, encourages individuals to view volunteerism as a long-term commitment that creates lasting change rather than a one-time act of service.

Volunteerism has long been recognized as an important part of building stronger communities, but Akshay Kumar believes many people underestimate the impact they can have when they approach service with purpose instead of obligation.

As a Business Development Director, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Kumar has spent years supporting nonprofit initiatives focused on disability services, education, women’s empowerment, food distribution, and community development. Through those experiences, he has come to believe that meaningful volunteer work is not measured by how often someone gives, but by the lasting difference their time, knowledge, and commitment can make.

“Volunteerism isn’t about checking a box or feeling good for a day,” says Kumar. “It’s about creating opportunities that continue helping people long after you’ve left. The goal should always be to build something that lasts.”

His perspective reflects a growing need for sustained community involvement. According to AmeriCorps, nearly 28% of Americans formally volunteered between September 2022 and 2023, contributing 4.99 billion hours of service across the country. Independent Sector estimates that volunteer hours represented more than $167 billion in economic value, highlighting the enormous role volunteers play in strengthening communities.

While those numbers demonstrate the importance of volunteerism, Kumar believes the conversation should move beyond the number of hours people serve.

“Some of the most meaningful contributions aren’t financial,” he says. “They’re the skills you share, the relationships you build, and the consistency you bring. Sometimes one person investing their time every week can create a ripple effect that lasts for years.”

Growing up in Houston, Kumar watched his parents build a business while maintaining a strong commitment to helping others. His sister, who has a mental disability, also shaped his understanding of compassion and inspired his long-standing interest in supporting organizations that serve vulnerable communities. Those experiences eventually influenced not only his volunteer work but also the way he approaches leadership.

Rather than viewing business and philanthropy as separate pursuits, Kumar believes the same principles that help organizations grow can also strengthen nonprofit initiatives.

“Business taught me the importance of building systems,” he explains. “Volunteer work taught me that those same principles can improve communities. When you focus on creating sustainable solutions instead of temporary fixes, your impact continues long after the original effort.”

Research has also shown that volunteering benefits those who serve. Studies have linked regular volunteerism with stronger social connections, improved mental well-being, and greater civic engagement. For Kumar, those personal benefits are meaningful, but they should never be the primary motivation.

Kumar encourages people to begin with simple, consistent acts of service rather than waiting until they have more time or resources.

What You Can Do Today

  • Commit one hour each week to a local nonprofit or community organization.

  • Share a professional skill, such as mentoring, marketing, accounting, or technology support.

  • Support organizations focused on creating long-term solutions instead of short-term relief.

  • Volunteer with friends, family members, or coworkers to build a lasting habit of service.

  • Learn about the needs within your own community before deciding where you can make the greatest impact.

  • Remember that consistency often creates more meaningful change than occasional large efforts.

“Every person has something valuable to offer,” Kumar says. “You don’t have to change the world overnight. Start by helping one person, one organization, or one community. Small actions, repeated consistently, have the power to create extraordinary change.”

Individuals interested in making a difference are encouraged to explore volunteer opportunities within their local communities and commit to one meaningful act of service this month.
