Prince George's County Student Appointed to U.S. Naval Academy After Receiving Signed Letter from President Obama at Age 9

Torene Butterfield

LANHAM, Md. – May 8, 2025 – Torene Butterfield, a distinguished student from Prince George’s County, Maryland, has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy (USNA), Class of 2029—becoming the first in her family to achieve this prestigious milestone.

What makes Torene’s journey extraordinary is not only her appointment, but the full-circle story behind it. At age 9, while attending Robert Goddard French Immersion School in Greenbelt, she penned a heartfelt letter to then-President Barack Obama. In it, she wrote about her passion for saving animals, community service, and her dream to make a difference. To her surprise, she received a signed letter in return, with President Obama writing: “Stories from young people like you inspire me every day.”

Now, a decade later, Torene has fulfilled that youthful promise. After completing a year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and securing a congressional nomination, she overcame personal loss-the passing of her grandmother who helped raise her-and graduated with distinction. She was raised by her mother, Karene A. Putney, and her stepfather, Lee V. Putney, whose support helped shape her journey to the Naval Academy.

Torene is a graduate of St. Timothy’s all-girl school and an alumna of Dora Kennedy French Immersion. She is fluent in French, studied Mandarin Chinese for four years, and is passionate about theater and human rights.

“This is the story of a young woman who stayed the course,” said her mother, Karene A. Putney. “She is a reminder that vision, service, and resilience can shape a powerful future.”
