Middle Miles - An Introspective Journey cycling from Canada to Mexico Along the Pacific Coast Highway

Phoenix, Arizona – May 27, 2025 – Following the success of his bestselling books The Buddha and the Bee, UNLOST, and Embracing Bewilderment, Mortensen once again climbs onto a bicycle and heads south. This memoir chronicles Mortensen’s solo bicycle journey from Canada to Mexico along the Pacific Coast, blending reflections on the road ahead with contemplations of the life left behind. The narrative is rich with philosophical insights, humor, and unflinching honesty.

Thirty-two years after his acclaimed work, The Buddha and the Bee, Mortensen embarks on a new adventure, capturing the essence of the open road and the introspection it invites. Readers will traverse diverse landscapes and encounter a tapestry of characters, all while delving into Mortensen’s personal musings on life, purpose, and the passage of time.

“This journey was as much about the miles covered as it was about the thoughts pondered,” says Mortensen. “Cycling the Pacific Coast allowed me to reflect on where I’ve been and where I’m headed, both on the map and in life.”

Perfect for fans of slow travel, thoughtful memoirs, and midlife awakenings, Middle Miles is not about chasing youth or finishing first. It’s about showing up every day – legs tired, heart open – and riding into the unknown because something in you refuses to stay still.

Why This Book Matters Now

We live in an age of reinvention. People are leaving careers, starting over, reassessing what it means to live well. Middle Miles is for everyone in between.

This book isn’t a declaration – it’s a conversation. With the road. With time. With the quiet voice inside. Mortensen doesn’t have answers. What he has is a willingness reflect with brutal honesty on what happens when we step away from the noise long enough to actually hear ourselves think.

About the Author

Born in New Prague, Minnesota, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Cory Mortensen’s life has been a series of unconventional adventures. After dropping out of college to work on Wake Island, he returned to the U.S. to pursue careers in architecture and real estate. His wanderlust led him to sell everything and travel the globe for two years, only to return to start a business which he sold ten years later. Now married, he and Kate sold everything again to travel and volunteer in South America for two years. Cory and Kate now reside in Phoenix, Arizona.

These experiences have deeply influenced his writing. His writing blends dry wit, reflective insight, and a beatnik sense of wanderlust to turn everyday moments into quietly profound revelations.

His earlier memoirs—The Buddha and the Bee, UNLOST, and Embracing Bewilderment—have sold tens of thousands of copies and built a loyal following of readers.
