UNITED STATES – August 25, 2026 – Press releases pile onto the same days and the same hours, according to a timing analysis of releases published in 2026 by distribution service PR Gun.
Tuesday is the single most popular day at 22.5 percent of volume, with Thursday close behind at 21.3 percent. Monday through Thursday together account for roughly 83 percent of all releases. Friday drops to 13.5 percent, and the weekend is nearly empty: Saturday and Sunday combined carry under 4 percent of volume.
The clock shows the same herding. Among releases with a recorded send time, noon Eastern is the most common hour, and roughly four in ten releases go out between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., precisely when newsroom inboxes are fullest.
The data does not say Tuesday is wrong, only that Tuesday is crowded. A release competing with the week’s peak volume needs a sharper headline and a tighter first sentence to survive triage, benchmarks covered in PR Gun’s how to write a press release guide and its pricing and formatting guide. How distribution services schedule and stagger delivery is compared in the best press release distribution services review.
The herding has a rational origin — conventional wisdom says midweek, mid-morning reaches journalists at their desks — but the corpus shows the advice defeating itself. When 83 percent of the week’s volume lands Monday through Thursday, with a noon spike, the “optimal” slot is optimal for everyone simultaneously, and a release becomes one of dozens arriving in the same hour. The empty slots are empty of competition, not empty of journalists.
The study does not argue for weekend publishing as a rule; newsroom staffing is genuinely thinner. It argues for matching the slot to the story. Announcements that need same-day pickup benefit from early-morning delivery ahead of the noon pile-up. Evergreen announcements — the data studies, the personnel notes, the product updates that are equally newsworthy Thursday or Sunday — face a fraction of the competition outside the peak, and remain in inboxes when triage resumes. Treating send time as a deliberate choice rather than a default costs nothing and is one of the few variables an issuer controls completely.
Methodology: PR Gun collected and analyzed 143,576 press releases distributed through ten major newswires between September 2021 and August 2026; 138,901 carried full body text and were used for content analysis. Matching is case-insensitive and counts presence per release, not frequency.
