International Travelers Payment App, Moreta, Marks Two Years of QR Code Payments for Foreigners Across 14 Countries
Moreta Global Inc., a Y Combinator-backed digital wallet built for QR code payments for foreigners, now operates in 14 countries across Asia and Latin America, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Brazil and China, and plans further expansion.

San Francisco, California – September 15, 2026 – Moreta is marking two years of operations providing QR code payments for foreigners traveling across Asia and Latin America, with its wallet now live in 14 countries. Moreta Global Inc. is backed by Y Combinator’s Summer 2024 batch. The wallet lets international travelers scan each country’s native merchant QR code, converting their balance to local currency at the moment of payment rather than requiring cash, card, or an ATM withdrawal.

The Moreta Pay app connects directly to domestic QR payment rails rather than routing transactions through international card networks. A traveler in Kuala Lumpur pays through DuitNow QR, and a traveler in Ho Chi Minh City pays through VietQR, with each transaction settling directly with the local merchant. Moreta first started enabling payments for foreigners in Asia in countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and China but is now also growing in popularity in Latin America in countries like Brazil with PIX all in the past year. Users fund their wallets through bank connections via Plaid, European SEPA, UK faster payment bank, Canadian e-Transfer bank transfers or international card top-ups, and the app includes a rate comparison tool showing exchange rates and spending power in the local currency. Identity verification is required, supported by around-the-clock fraud monitoring, real-time account alerts and login anomaly detection.

“We built Moreta so a traveler could walk into a market in Phnom Penh or a coffee shop in Kuala Lumpur and pay exactly the way a local would, scanning the same QR code instead of hunting for an ATM or hoping a card terminal accepts a foreign Visa,” said Walid Mahd, Co-Founder and CEO of Moreta. “Reaching 14 countries in our first year tells us that removing cash from the equation is what foreigners actually wanted.”

Cross-border card fees and ATM withdrawal charges remain a persistent monetary and convenience cost for travelers in Asia and Latin America, and many merchants outside major tourist corridors cannot accept international cards at all. Moreta routes foreign spending through the same domestic QR infrastructure that local consumers already use every day, which the company frames as a mutual benefit. Travelers get a lower-cost, more reliable way to pay, while local merchants and national payment networks such as VietQR, PIX, ThaiQR, QR Ph and more receive that spending directly rather than losing it to card-network intermediaries or cash that never enters the formal payment system.

“When a foreign visitor pays through VietQR instead of pulling dongs from an ATM, that transaction flows through Vietnam’s own payment rail and reaches the merchant the way any local customer’s payment would,” Mahd said. “That is the model we want to scale: more confident spending for the traveler, and more of that spending landing inside the local system it was always meant to support.”

Moreta said it intends to extend coverage across the rest of Asia and Latin America as we enter 2027, building on the 14-country footprint reached in its first two years. The Moreta app is available for download now, with funding options including US bank deposits connected via Plaid, European SEPA, UK faster payments, Canadian Interac e-Transfer bank transfers and international card top-ups for travelers preparing upcoming trips.
