Mani, Greece / London, UK – October 10, 2026-AJAX The Dog That Could Talk by Niki Patriarcheas is a book of eight illustrated bedtime stories based on themes of friendship, compassion, collaboration, and caring for others. Set around a wonderful Pharaoh hound that could talk with humans, the tales narrate about Ajax’s journey from being a racing dog in Egypt to finding a new home in Mani, where people and animals are his best friends.

Across the collection, the values found in everyday life are placed in imaginative adventures that younger readers will relate to. Ajax and his friends jump into action to help a piglet who is being neglected, band together to free a goat trapped on the ledge of a mountain, and find creative ways to be able to help members of their community. Kindness is often presented in these stories as a result of actions taken rather than simply something that exists as a concept.

Later stories expand upon this theme to focus on community problem-solving. During a prolonged dry period, the animals work together to bring mountain water to their village, and another adventure follows a seal’s difficult sea rescue after he finds a stranded man on a raft.

• Eight self-contained bedtime stories tie together recurring characters and a common setting.
• Animal-centric adventures focus on themes of friendship, love, kindness, and responsibility.
• Cooperative rescues emphasize teamwork and support during challenges.
• Storylines focus on animal welfare, community needs, and practical problem-solving approaches.
• Illustrated scenes accompany the collection’s characters, adventures, and Mediterranean setting.

The final story unites the wider group for Ajax’s birthday picnic, reinforcing the collection’s overarching theme of happiness found in friendship, belonging, shared experiences, and mutual care.
