ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Young pianist and composer Yidi Ding has released his original work, Piano Concerto No. 1, Spring, on major global streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. The release marks Yidi Ding’s first original piano concerto to be published internationally in the United States.
Composed between 2020 and 2021, Spring piano concerto was inspired by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Yidi Ding began studying at the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School in 2019 at the age of seven. As the pandemic reshaped daily life around the world, he began developing a musical work reflecting both the challenges of that period and the hope for renewal.
The concerto is centered on the theme of spring as a symbol of resilience.
The approximately 23-minutes concerto is written in three movements for piano and orchestra. Its orchestration includes 19 instruments, combining a traditional Western symphony orchestra with several Chinese traditional instruments, including the pipa, guzheng, erhu, and hulusi. By integrating Chinese musical colors into a Western concerto form, the work explores a dialogue between Eastern and Western musical traditions.
The concerto opens with an expressive oboe melody that establishes a reflective atmosphere before the piano and orchestra gradually develop themes of struggle, resilience, and renewal. Across its three movements, the music traces an emotional journey from uncertainty toward hope.
Yidi Ding has performed internationally from an early age. He entered the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School at age seven, was selected as a Young Scholar by the Lang Lang International Music Foundation at age eight, and was named a Young Steinway Artist at age eleven. He has appeared in performances at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Musikverein (Golden Hall) in Vienna many times.
